Another name for the month of Ramadan is Shahr As-Sabr (the month of patience). It is indeed primarily the month of fasting but for one to successfully fast patience is required. Proper spiritual fasting isn't a shallow act nor is it light work. It is a feat of faith containing many layers. One of its richest layers is sabr. Sabr can be defined as a beautiful marriage between patience and endurance. When things get tough the believers does not quit. The believer digs deep, continually rediscovering varied forms of patience and endurance. The believer remembers that their sacrifice is temporary and the compensation they are to receive is worth far more than the work they put it. Thus Shahr as-Sabr is a month long session of soulful endurance and spiritual training that makes us ready for what is to come.
